Hello everyone! How are you these days ?
We went to visit Seodaemun jail with Shane this Tuesday. He is also a staff in Leo Guesthouse and we decided to go there at the last minute and during a snowy days, but it was fun.
This place is really interesting. This is a hot place for history lovers. When you visit this old jail you understand really well the story and the relationships between Korea and Japan. This part of history is really sad, but the museum there explains you well what happened.
The first part of the visit consists of a museum explaining the facts and what happened and why this place is important in Korean history. The second part leads you to the basement of the first building in where they did torture a lot of convicted man and women.
After the first building you reach a big jail quarter where you discover the cells and the life in the jail. Everywhere during the visit, you can see corners with old prisoners testimonies (but it's only in Korean starting this part).
After this huge building you have to walk a little outside before you arrive in front of the hanging room. You then discover the whole process and it was scary and seedy.
At the end, you can explore the weird sport ground in the middle of what is now a park.
During the visit we were impressed a lot by what they did to renovate the jail and to teach people what happened. I have to admit we felt weird after this visit, but it's a must see in Seoul and South Korea!
